USPTO Adopts e-Registration Certificates

The USPTO continues to support sustainability by moving to electronic trademark registration certificates. Starting May 24th, trademark registration certificates will no longer be issued by printing the registration certificate on paper and mailing the certificate to the correspondence address of record. Instead, the registration will be issued electronically by the USPTO under electronic signature of the Director and with a digital seal, which serves to authenticate the registration. The USPTO will upload official registration certificates to the Trademark Status and Document Retrieval (TSDR) system and email trademark owners and all email addresses of record a link to access their certificates upon issue. A complete copy of the registration certificate can be viewed, downloaded, and printed at any time and for no charge. Printed presentation and certified copies can still be ordered for a nominal cost.

This is a welcome move by the USPTO. Not only does this sustainability by reducing the number of paper certificates printed by the USPTO, it also reduces the paper used by myself and other practitioners to mail the certificates to our clients.
